Advocacy & Support for Carers

Because those who care, need care too.

Why Carer Support Matters

Foster and kinship carers are the heart of the out-of-home care system. They open their homes and their hearts to children who have experienced trauma, loss, and instability—often at a moment’s notice—offering the one thing every child needs most: safety.

But behind every brave “yes” a carer says, there’s a world of complexity: navigating bureaucracies, managing emotional and behavioural needs, juggling appointments and finances, and supporting their own families and wellbeing. At A Better Life For Foster Kids, we believe carers shouldn’t have to do it alone.

How We Support Carers

Advice & Advocacy

Sometimes you just need someone to talk to—someone who truly understands the system and can help you make sense of it. We offer:

  • One-on-one phone or email consultations

  • Referrals to specialist services (legal, financial, emotional)

  • Active advocacy to secure entitlements and supports

Carer Catch-Ups

Regular in-person gatherings in the Gippsland region create a safe, relaxed space where carers can:

  • Share stories and practical tips

  • Build friendships and peer networks

  • Recharge with light refreshments and childcare

Online Peer Support

Our private Facebook group is a lifeline for many carers—a 24/7 space to:

    • Ask questions and swap resources

    • Celebrate wins and troubleshoot challenges

    • Receive encouragement from those who “get it”

A Little Love Letter

I didn’t know where to turn—I just needed someone who’d been through it. The support from A Better Life For Foster Kids reminded me I wasn’t doing this alone. That meant everything.

The Foster Care Crisis in Victoria: It’s Time for Change

Heather from A Better Life for Foster Kids speaks from the heart about the urgent need to reform Victoria’s foster care system. With too many children falling through the cracks and carers feeling unsupported and unheard, it’s time to take action.

This powerful message is a call for change, to give foster children and their carers the voice, respect, and support they deserve.
